Uiwang City Wins Grand Prize in 2020 Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] Uiwang City received the grand prize in the "2020 Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation" jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Transportation Institute.

While the city has previously won excellence and outstanding city awards in the population group of over 100,000 and under 300,000, this is the first time it has received the grand prize.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport selects outstanding local governments based on 32 evaluation indicators in the environmental, social, and economic sectors for 75 cities with populations of 100,000 or more, in accordance with the "Sustainable Transportation and Logistics Development Act."

Rankings are determined through evaluation of each city's transportation and logistics indicators and evaluation of policies entered into the system by local governments.

The city received high marks for ▲public transportation fields including wide-area bus route bidding systems and bus route restructuring ▲transportation-disadvantaged sectors including operation of special vehicles for people with disabilities and free shuttle buses at welfare centers ▲traffic information fields such as responsive signal ITS contests and village bus information collection systems ▲and the new establishment of transit parking facilities and escalators at Uiwang Station.

Mayor Kim Sang-don of Uiwang City stated, "This award is a meaningful recognition of our consistent efforts to create a safe and comfortable transportation city for residents," and added, "In 2021, we will cooperate to expedite construction of the double-track railway between Indeokwon and Dongtan and between Wolgot and Pangyo, and through efforts to attract the GTX-C line, we will develop a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation city."
