Gyeonggi Province Supports Priority Entry into 103 Public Rental Homes for Youth Leaving Care

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park No-hoon] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that it will support priority entry into public rental homes operated by Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation (GH) for youth leaving care—those who must depart from child welfare facilities after turning 18—and will additionally cover up to 95% of deposits for jeonse-type rental homes, with a maximum of 111 million won.

According to Gyeonggi Province, approximately 400 youth leaving care are generated annually in the province, and only about half of them receive government housing support such as LH jeonse-type rental home programs.

The remainder depend on foster families or monthly/jeonse rental arrangements, facing difficulties in social adaptation and self-sufficiency.

In response, the province has decided to provide priority entry into GH public rental homes and related financial support for youth leaving care who do not receive government assistance.

First, the priority entry support for GH public rental homes allocates 103 units total this year: 26 youth purchase-type rental homes, 55 jeonse-type rental homes, and 22 Happy Homes.

Next year, the province plans to secure greater quantities to ensure no cases of unmet housing needs.

Among the three types, the application period for youth purchase-type rental homes runs from April 19 to 23.

Target regions include Suwon, Yongin, Ansan, Osan, and Gimpo. Applications are accepted by registered mail only.

Jeonse-type rental homes are being accepted on a rolling basis through each city or county community center, and Happy Homes are scheduled to be announced by late this month or mid-May.

Financial support is also being provided: ▲For youth purchase-type rental homes, interest-free loans covering 50% of the rental deposit (maximum 2.5 million won, 6-year term) ▲For jeonse-type rental homes directly obtained by youth leaving care with support application, 95% coverage of the rental deposit (maximum 111 million won, 20-year term) ▲For Happy Homes, interest subsidy up to 40% of loan principal (6-year term) ▲For general housing, jeonse loan guarantee and interest support (maximum 45 million won, 4-year term), and more.

Hong Ji-seon, Director of Urban Housing for Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Housing support for youth leaving care does not merely reduce housing burden—it can serve as psychological support for children entering the world," and added, "We will continue efforts in housing support policy to maintain continuity of residential stability for youth leaving care."
