[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Uiwang City announced on the 15th that it received 'UNICEF Child-Friendly City Certification' from the UNICEF Korea Committee on the 9th.
With this certification, Uiwang City has become the 9th local government in Gyeonggi Province and the 59th nationwide to receive child-friendly city certification. The certification period spans 4 years, from the 9th through November 8, 2025.
UNICEF Child Friendly Cities is a designation for local governments that fully realize children's rights as stipulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and provide child-friendly environments so children can lead happy lives. Certification is determined by evaluating 46 detailed items based on 10 principles for creating child-friendly cities.
The city has faithfully implemented the 10 principles necessary for creating a child-friendly city, beginning with signing a business agreement with the UNICEF Korea Committee in 2019, including △establishing a dedicated department for children's rights △building a system for children's participation △implementing child impact assessments and child rights advocates systems △conducting surveys on the current state of children's rights △establishing strategies for creating child-friendly cities and others.
In particular, the UNICEF Korea Committee is reported to have highly evaluated the efforts and multi-year preparations by the municipal government and civil society to transition Uiwang City into a child-friendly environment.
Uiwang Mayor Kim Sang-don said, "Receiving UNICEF Child-Friendly City Certification means that Uiwang City has established a child-friendly foundation," and added, "We will make greater efforts to ensure that the foundation created thus far is well maintained and developed, pursue projects at a child's level of understanding, and expand community awareness of children's rights."
