[Suwon Ilbo = Reporter Shin Eun-seop] Ganghwa County announced on the 10th that it has developed measures for garbage reduction and elimination of illegal dumping to 'create a beautiful and clean Ganghwa.'
The county plans to additionally install 250 'Recycling Neighborhood Centers' this year, which are being set up in villages for garbage reduction, and will produce and distribute 1.5 million recycling-specific bags by product category.
The 'Recycling Neighborhood Centers' is a key project being promoted to support proper recycling and sorting, with 225 centers installed last year. Resource management staff are also deployed to guide residents on garbage management and proper sorting methods, receiving positive responses from residents. The recycling centers, designed in the shape of a torch that is the county's symbol, are also being evaluated as helping to improve the appearance of villages.
The 'Recycling-Specific Bags' are being distributed free of charge, dividing garbage bags that were previously categorized as either incineration or landfill waste into four types: ▲transparent PET bottles ▲cans ▲plastic ▲glass bottles. Last year, 1 million bags were distributed and received praise for dramatically improving the recycling rate.
In addition, to eliminate illegal dumping, the county will install and operate an additional 100 surveillance cameras in habitual dumping areas. The county currently operates 363 surveillance cameras equipped with day and night motion detection functions, with dedicated staff monitoring them, issuing fines in 542 cases last year alone.
County Governor Yu Cheon-ho said, "We plan to strengthen and implement policies for garbage reduction and elimination of illegal dumping to ensure Ganghwa is clean wherever you go on the streets," and asked, "I urge all residents to show interest and participate in proper garbage sorting and recycling."
