Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market Establishing Itself as Southern Gyeonggi Hub Wholesale Market
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Joon-sung] The Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market is accelerating its facility modernization project to establish itself as a hub wholesale market in southern Gyeonggi Province.
The Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market facility modernization project is transforming the aging market, which opened in 1993, into a modern distribution facility equipped with advanced logistics systems and eco-friendly facilities.
The city is conducting the project through a three-phase rolling method (phased circular redevelopment approach) to maintain normal market operations during construction.
The method involves partial demolition and reconstruction of existing buildings, with vendors sequentially moving into newly completed buildings.
Starting in November 2017, Phase 1 construction began on building two temporary markets for vegetable building vendors, which was completed in June 2018. Phase 2 construction, involving new construction and relocation of fruit and aquatic products buildings, was completed in September 2021.
Phase 3 construction, involving new construction and relocation of vegetable buildings 1 and 2, and the logistics and direct sales building, is currently underway. The construction progress rate is 81%. Vendors are expected to resume business at the modernized wholesale market starting in March.
Meanwhile, Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young visited the ‘Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market Facility Modernization Project’ site on the 28th to inspect the project progress, urging on-site officials to “prioritize safety and proceed with construction.”
He further stated, “We must innovate the distribution structure with facility modernization, advance facility management, and activate transactions to increase market value,” and added, “Let us make the Suwon Agricultural and Aquatic Products Wholesale Market a logistics hub market for agricultural and aquatic products in southern Gyeonggi.”
