Gyeonggi Province appoints Kim Yong-jin as Deputy Governor for Economy...Plans to designate chair of Provincial Policy Advisory Council
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park No-hoon] Following Gyeonggi Province's announcement on the 19th of an organizational restructuring plan with the creation of a Deputy Governor for Economy as its main component, it announced personnel selections for the new Deputy Governor for Economy and the chair of the newly established policy advisory body, the Provincial Policy Advisory Council, on the 20th.
According to the province on the 21st, former Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance Kim Yong-jin has been nominated as the first Deputy Governor for Economy under the eighth popularly elected government, and former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young is scheduled to be designated as chair of the newly constituted policy advisory body, 'Gyeonggi Province Policy Advisory Council.'
Nominee Kim Yong-jin for Deputy Governor for Economy is from Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. He attended Segwang High School and Sungkyunkwan University, and received a master's degree in public policy from the KDI School of Public Policy and Management.
After passing the 30th national civil service examination in 1986 and entering public service, he served as director of the Welfare and Labor Budget Division at the Ministry of Planning and Budget, financial and economic official at the British Embassy, director of External Economic Affairs, director of Public Innovation Planning, spokesman for the Deputy Prime Minister, director of Social Budget Review, and head of the Regional Development Committee Planning Division. He also served as president of Korea Western Power Co., Ltd., Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance, and chairman of the National Pension Service, making him a finance and economics expert.
When Governor Kim Dong-yeon served as the inaugural Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance in the Moon Jae-in administration, he worked together as Second Vice Minister leading national finance and economic policy.
Nominee Kim will undergo appointment procedures including deliberation by the Personnel Committee prior to his official inauguration.
Gyeonggi Province also plans to designate former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young as the new chair of the 'Gyeonggi Province Policy Advisory Council.'
The 'Gyeonggi Province Policy Advisory Council' is a major policy advisory body for the eighth popularly elected government, and will include experts from various fields.
Former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young was born in Suwon in 1960. He graduated from Suwon Sungseong High School and Seoul National University's Department of Agricultural Chemistry.
During the Roh Moo-hyun administration, he served as a secretary in the Office of Presidential Secretary at the Blue House and as standing auditor of the Korea National Park Service.
In the 2010 Suwon mayoral election, he ran for and was first elected as Suwon mayor.
He was subsequently elected again in 2014 and 2018, setting a record as Suwon's first three-term mayor.
Former Mayor Yeom is evaluated as the top expert on local autonomy and decentralization, and was selected as the person best suited to implement Governor Kim Dong-yeon's philosophy of communication and cooperative governance, according to provincial officials.
The Provincial Policy Advisory Council will be responsible for monitoring progress on major provincial policies and suggesting improvements, planning new policies and establishing strategies. It will address Governor Kim Dong-yeon's core campaign pledges and major provincial issues including the establishment of Gyeonggi Northern Special Self-Governing Province, relocation of Suwon Military Airport, creation of a startup paradise province, revitalization of the social economy, and strengthened communication with residents.
