Uiwang City Receives Highest Grade 'A' in Ministry of Interior and Safety's 'Natural Disaster Safety Diagnosis'

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Uiwang City announced on the 6th that it received the highest grade 'A' in the '2022 Natural Disaster Safety Diagnosis' conducted by the Ministry of Interior and Safety targeting 228 local governments nationwide.

The Natural Disaster Safety Diagnosis, in accordance with the 'Natural Disaster Countermeasures Act,' evaluates all local governments nationwide annually across 53 safety diagnosis items including natural disaster risk factors, prevention measures, and facility maintenance, assigning a total of 5 grades (A to E).

Uiwang City received high evaluations in the areas of comprehensive natural disaster mitigation planning, wind and flood insurance activation, and community autonomous disaster prevention unit activation, earning the highest grade 'A,' which is awarded to the top 15% of local governments.

Grade A is conferred to the top 34 local governments among 228 cities, counties, and districts nationwide. With this Grade A designation, Uiwang City will be eligible to receive an additional 2% in state subsidy for disaster recovery expenses when an area is declared a special disaster zone due to natural disasters.

Uiwang City Mayor Kim Sung-je stated, "Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, preparations for torrential rains and typhoons that cause major damage annually due to climate change cannot be neglected," adding, "We will make our best efforts in 2023 to create an environment where citizens of Uiwang City can live with peace of mind."
