Uiwang City Launches Yellow Crosswalk Installation Project in Children's Protection Zones
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Uiwang City announced on the 1st that it is implementing a "yellow crosswalk installation project in children's protection zones" to prevent traffic accidents involving children.
The project is being promoted to provide a safe commuting environment for students by painting crosswalks yellow, enabling drivers to clearly recognize children's protection zones based solely on the crosswalk color.
Regulations for yellow crosswalk installation are specified in the amended Road Traffic Act that went into effect on the 4th of last month. According to the Road Traffic Act Enforcement Rules, children's protection zones are to be equipped with yellow crosswalks.
Accordingly, the city has completed priority installation of yellow crosswalks in children's protection zones at 10 elementary schools including Bugok, Wanggok, Naedong, and Baekunhosoo Elementary Schools within Uiwang City through traffic safety governance with the Uiwang Police Station (Director Hong Myung-gon).
Mayor Kim Sung-je of Uiwang City stated, "Starting with the 10 schools that received priority installation, we plan to expand yellow crosswalk painting to all school zones within the city," adding, "We will continue to promote improvement projects in children's protection zones, including the installation of unmanned traffic equipment, protective fences, and LED floor signals, to create an environment where children can safely commute to and from school."
