Uiwang City Unveils Memorial Monument for Korean War Veterans

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kim Chung-young] Uiwang City held an unveiling ceremony for the 'Uiwang City Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument' on the 7th next to Galmoe Hangeul Park (231 Naesон-dong).

The unveiling ceremony, held to commemorate the noble sacrificial spirit of Korean War veterans who died for the nation, was attended by approximately 150 people including Mayor Kim Sung-je of Uiwang City, Jung Mu-gwon, chairman of the Korea 6.25 War Veterans Association Uiwang Chapter, and heads of veterans organizations. The event proceeded with the national oath, commemorative remarks, congratulatory speeches, and the unveiling ceremony.

The names of 157 Korean War veterans from Uiwang City, including Chairman Jung Mu-gwon, are engraved on the memorial monument.

Mayor Kim Sung-je of Uiwang City stated, "I hope this memorial monument will awaken our descendants to the painful history of the past, and serve as a lesson to remember and respect the patriots who died for our nation, and learn the spirit of patriotism."

Meanwhile, the city conducted a public call for proposals for commemorative monuments in June last year and selected the monument design. Since April 2023, the city has been constructing three commemorative monuments at city locations. Following the Independence Activists Memorial Monument unveiling ceremony held at Wangsong Lake on the 13th of last month and the Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument unveiling on the 7th, the city plans to hold the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial Monument unveiling ceremony on December 4th in front of the Areumdae Senior Welfare Center.
