[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kim Chung-young] Uiwang City has been recognized as the safest city in the nation.
The city announced on the 21st that it was selected as an exemplary region in the 'National Local Safety Index 2023' announced by the Ministry of Interior and Safety on the 19th.
Since 2015, the Ministry of Interior and Safety has annually diagnosed relative safety capabilities including regional and sector-specific safety levels and safety awareness by region, and has been publishing a local safety index that objectively represents these findings.
Based on 2022 statistics, Uiwang City achieved Grade 1 in three sectors—daily safety, suicide prevention, and infectious disease—and Grade 2 in three sectors—traffic accidents, fire, and crime. The ministry selected six regions including Uiwang, which received Grade 1 or 2 in all sectors, as 'exemplary local safety index regions.'
The city has made various efforts to create a safe urban environment for citizens, including △expanding CCTV and smart street lights in vulnerable areas such as alleyways △establishing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) guidelines △operating citizen safety security personnel △providing support for natural disaster preparedness, and others.
Uiwang City Mayor Kim Sung-je said, "The most fundamental prerequisite for creating a city where citizens want to live is safety," adding "We will continue to spare no effort to ensure that citizens can enjoy healthy lives in a safe urban environment."
