Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun Elected Chairman of Korea's Special Cities Mayors Association

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun was elected chairman of the Korea's Special Cities Mayors Association at the 'Korea's Special Cities Mayors Association 2024 First Half Regular Meeting' held on the 13th. His term runs from July 1 through June of next year.

The meeting held at the Yongin Forest Education Center was attended by Mayor Lee Jae-jun, Goyang Mayor Lee Dong-hwan, Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il, Changwon Mayor Hong Nam-pyo, and Hwaseong Mayor Jung Myung-geun as an associate member.

Hwaseong City, which surpassed a population of one million in December last year, will become a special city in 2025 if it maintains a population of one million through this year.

Mayor Lee Jae-jun said, "As chairman, I will work hard together with fellow mayors to build a better special city," and added, "The 'Special Cities Support Special Act' that the President has promised to enact will be a major turning point for special cities." He continued, "I will make efforts to include as much as possible regarding finances, organization, and administrative authority in the legislation."

At the meeting, Korea's Special Cities Mayors Association reviewed the '2024-2025 Business Plan' and discussed agenda items including △submitting recommendations related to the Special Act enactment △holding an academic seminar for Special Act enactment △hosting a policy discussion forum to realize local autonomy for special cities.
