Suwon Selected as Excellent Organization in Gyeonggi Province's '2024 Summer Flood and Windstorm Comprehensive Assessment'

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon Special City has been selected as an excellent organization in Gyeonggi Province's '2024 Summer Flood and Windstorm Comprehensive Assessment' and has secured 450 million won in disaster management funds for the first half of next year, the city announced on the 29th.

Gyeonggi Province conducted a comprehensive evaluation of flood and windstorm response achievements during this summer's natural disaster countermeasures period for 31 cities and counties and selected excellent organizations.

Suwon received high marks by thoroughly inspecting and preparing for summer natural disasters.

In preparation for the rainy season, the city conducted field inspections from March to August on 5,489 storm drains, 34 underground underpasses, 23 steep slopes, 31 provincial and minor streams, 6 drainage pump stations, and 8 landslide-vulnerable areas.

In particular, to prevent flooding at the Hwasan Underground Underpass, a habitual flood-prone area, the city replaced aging drainage pumps and established comprehensive measures including step-by-step response manuals. Mayor Lee Jae-joon held an on-site city manager's office at the Hwasan Underground Underpass on July 2 and conducted field inspections.

Additionally, the city carried out △24-hour rapid response team operations for flood prevention △installation of emergency evacuation facilities at underground underpasses △business to resolve habitual flooding in Younghwa-dong △control of flood-risk areas △joint drills for flood prevention at underground underpasses and river promenades.

A city official stated, "Following our selection as an excellent local government in the Ministry of Interior and Safety's '2023-2024 Winter Natural Disaster Countermeasures Promotion Evaluation,' we have achieved results in being selected as an excellent organization in Gyeonggi Province's comprehensive assessment," and added, "We will thoroughly prepare and respond this winter as well to protect the safety of our citizens."
