Pyeongtaek City Proves Its Status as 'Metropolitan Traffic Culture Leader'
[Suwon Ilbo=Park Chan-hyuk Reporter] Pyeongtaek City's traffic culture index has been found to be the highest among 66 cities, counties, and districts in the metropolitan area including Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province.
According to the '2024 Traffic Culture Index Actual Condition Survey' announced on January 31 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Road Traffic Authority, Pyeongtaek City's traffic culture index scored 90.17 points and received a Grade A rating. This ranks first among cities, counties, and districts in the metropolitan area, and second among 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide, following Wonju City in Gangwon Province.
The traffic culture index is data compiled annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to objectively evaluate traffic culture levels across cities, counties, and districts nationwide by analyzing △driving behavior, △pedestrian behavior, △local government efforts, and △the number of traffic accident casualties. Local governments with excellent traffic culture levels or high improvement rates are recognized.
In the same survey in 2023, Pyeongtaek City received a Grade E rating with 70 points. However, last year it received high scores in driving behavior, pedestrian behavior, and local government efforts, recording a Grade A rating, which represents a four-grade improvement from the previous year.
In fact, Pyeongtaek City recorded the highest scores in the metropolitan area for △driving behavior (49.78 points), △pedestrian behavior (18.86 points), and △local government efforts (10.11 points).
Mayor Jung Jang-seon stated, "Despite heavy vehicle traffic including personal vehicles and various vehicles traveling between construction sites and industrial complexes in Pyeongtaek, the traffic culture index has been recorded as the highest in the metropolitan area," and expressed gratitude to citizens, saying, "This is thanks to mature civic consciousness."
He continued, "Going forward, the city will analyze the causes of traffic accidents and implement improvement measures, expand traffic enforcement equipment and provide civic education to reduce traffic accidents and establish a safe traffic environment for citizens to have peace of mind."
