Namyangju City Holds Completion Ceremony for Jeong Yak-yong Resident Autonomy University

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Eom In-yong] Namyangju City held a completion ceremony for the ‘2025 Jeong Yak-yong Resident Autonomy University’ on the 20th at the multipurpose hall of Gyeonggi Provincial Citizen Media Center, graduating a total of 71 students.

The ceremony was attended by approximately 150 people, including Mayor Ju Gwang-deok and executive members of the Resident Autonomy Council, and proceeded with the completion of professional instruction, followed by the awarding of certificates and commemorative photographs.

The 2025 Jeong Yak-yong Resident Autonomy University was operated four times from the 11th to the 20th with the theme of ‘Taking First Steps in Resident Autonomy with Jeong Yak-yong's Wisdom,’ targeting newly appointed resident autonomy committee members.

The curriculum was composed of practice-oriented content including △understanding the value of resident autonomy △understanding resident autonomy organizations △operating resident autonomy meetings △operating resident autonomy projects, enabling new members to develop the capacity to immediately apply their learning to actual resident autonomy council activities.

As part of the Dasan Jeong Yak-yong brand project, the resident autonomy university, which has been named ‘Jeong Yak-yong’ starting this year, reflects Jeong Yak-yong's philosophy based on people-centered ideology throughout the curriculum. Going beyond simple theoretical education, the program is structured as a practice-oriented program that helps residents participate as agents in their communities and directly solve local autonomy issues, with the goal of inheriting the spirit of Jeong Yak-yong.

Meanwhile, the city plans to establish a Namyangju-style resident autonomy education model and support continuous capacity building of resident autonomy committee members by operating resident autonomy education programs that reflect Jeong Yak-yong's thought and philosophy, including the ‘Jeong Yak-yong Resident Autonomy University,’ ‘Resident Autonomy Humanities Walk - Walking the Path of Dasan,’ and ‘Resident Autonomy Humanities Special Lecture - Jeong Yak-yong Edition.’

Moon Myeong-woo, head of the city's Administrative Support Division, said, "The graduates who completed the four-session program over two weeks created an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the local community through voluntary participation and enhance their interest in and capacity for resident autonomy activities."

Mayor Ju Gwang-deok said, “Your passion shown at the resident autonomy university will become the driving force for Namyangju's development,” and added, “I hope you will inherit the teachings of Jeong Yak-yong that you have learned through this education and engage in active resident autonomy activities in your respective local communities going forward.”
