Gwangju City Launches Full-Scale 'Mokhyeon Stream Ecological Restoration Project'

[Suwon Ilbo = Reporter Um In-yong] Gwangju City announced on the 31st that it has completed all approvals this month for the 'Mokhyeon Stream Ecological Restoration Project,' selected for a Gyeonggi Province-led public recruitment project, including approval of the aquatic ecosystem restoration plan (from the Han River Basin Environmental Office) and local financial investment review (from the Ministry of Interior and Safety), and has begun full-scale project implementation.

According to the aquatic ecosystem restoration plan established this time, the 3.2-kilometer section from the Agricultural Technology Center to the entrance of the Ibae Tunnel will be divided into △conservation and water quality improvement zones and △water-friendly areas, where ecological banks, riffle formations, and eco-exploration trails will be installed to transform the stream into an ecological waterway where nature and people coexist.

The project, which will receive total funding of 45 billion won (22.5 billion won from the province, 15.7 billion won from the water system fund, and 6.8 billion won from the municipal budget), will begin basic and detailed design work in September, complete land compensation by the end of 2026, and target completion of construction by the end of 2028.

The city expects this restoration project to serve as an opportunity to enhance the value of the region's ecological assets by recovering the health of the aquatic ecosystem and providing citizens with pleasant recreational spaces.

Mayor Bang Se-hwan stated, "We will carefully advance the project from the design stage so that Mokhyeon Stream is reborn as an ecological waterway where nature and people coexist," and added, "We will create tangible results that citizens can experience."
