[Suwon Ilbo = Reporter Eom In-yong] Guri City announced on the 21st that it will substantially advance construction on the Phase 1 section from Donggureung Station to Dongchang Bridge from August this year through April next year for the 'Donggureung to Dolldari Historical Street Project,' a campaign promise of the eighth civil administration.
The 'Historical Street Project' is an initiative to create a pleasant and walkable road surrounding Donggureung, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a representative archaeological site of the Joseon Dynasty, infused with a historical theme.
Through this effort, the city plans to install public facilities reflecting the historical significance and design of Donggureung, transforming it into a representative historical street of the nation.
The Phase 1 section currently under construction, from Donggureung Station to Dongchang Bridge, spans a 330-meter bidirectional road segment. While reflecting the requests of nearby residents, the city plans to improve the streetscape by replacing the existing paved sidewalk with granite stone slabs designed to resemble the "Chamdo" (參道, the ceremonial pathway built from the Hongsalmun gate to the Jeongjakgak pavilion in front of the royal tomb for paying respects at royal tombs during the Joseon Dynasty) of royal tombs, and planting pine trees as street trees.
Baek Gyeong-hyeon, mayor of Guri City, stated, "Through this project, we plan to transform the aging sidewalk on Donggureung Road into a representative historical street of the nation that befits the prestige of Donggureung," and added, "This will help promote Donggureung, Guri City's representative cultural heritage, improve urban aesthetics, and prevent safety accidents for our citizens."
