Mayor Jung Jang-seon of Pyeongtaek: "I will do my best until the end of my term"

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park Chan-hyuk] Mayor Jung Jang-seon of Pyeongtaek said, "I will do my best to create a stable and sustainable city with citizens until the end of my term."

At a New Year press conference held on the 19th at the city hall conference room attended by approximately 100 journalists and senior government officials, Mayor Jung stated, "Pyeongtaek has now moved beyond a city that laid the foundation for growth and entered a stage of leaping forward as a million-strong metropolitan city that enhances residents' quality of life."

The briefing was held in the order of major achievements announcement, 2026 key policy explanation, and question-and-answer session.

At the meeting, Mayor Jung announced that meaningful results have been achieved in resolving long-pending tasks that had been stalled during the 7th and 8th civilian administrations, expanding urban infrastructure, and fostering future industries.

In fact, regarding pending projects, the city has enhanced urban competitiveness by providing solutions to major projects that had been delayed for a long time, including the development of Pyeongtaek Lake tourist complex, creation of Brain City general industrial complex, attracting an international school, KAIST, and Ajou University Hospital, and reform of public transportation systems.

Additionally, the city has launched construction of core public infrastructure to enhance urban competitiveness, including Pyeongtaek City Administrative Town, Western Branch Office, Pyeongtaek Station Complex Cultural Plaza, and Pyeongtaek Jije Station Integrated Transfer Center, and is strengthening its status as a key hub city in the southern metropolitan area through expansion of transportation networks such as GTX-A·C, Anjung Station, Pyeongtaek Lake cross-lake road, and Western Inland Expressway.

Mayor Jung also pointed out that the city is fostering semiconductors, hydrogen, and future automobiles as three major future growth engines.

In the semiconductor sector, a semiconductor ecosystem is being established centered on Samsung Electronics, where the entire semiconductor cycle from research and design to production, post-process, and talent cultivation takes place. In the hydrogen industry, the city is also pushing forward the foundation of production, construction of charging and supply infrastructure, and hydrogen utilization projects in stages, earning recognition as a city leading Korea's hydrogen industry. In the future vehicle sector, future vehicle industry is also beginning to expand significantly, including the establishment of an 'integrated performance evaluation center for electronic components.'

Additionally, Mayor Jung announced that during the 7th and 8th civilian administrations, the city has created a city where culture and leisure coexist through the establishment of a cultural foundation, construction of Pyeongtaek Arts Center, establishment of Pyeongtaek Municipal Korean Music Orchestra, promotion of a 30-year comprehensive Green Way plan, and creation of urban green axis.

As the 8th civilian administration concludes this year, Mayor Jung also expressed his commitment to leading Pyeongtaek city administration with the goal of 'regional stability and seamless implementation of core projects.' This year's city administration will be operated around six key directions: △livelihood-first local economic revitalization △cultivation of self-sufficient economy and future high-tech industries △balanced city with convenient living △creation of green environmental city △international cultural city rich in entertainment △education opening the future and warm welfare.

At the same time, the city plans to focus administrative resources to ensure that major policies and large-scale projects pursued to date are stably established, and will make efforts to manage sustained projects and enhance completeness to maintain the momentum of city growth.

In particular, regarding Samsung Pyeongtaek Campus, a core hub of national advanced industries, the city plans to strengthen support so that the P5 project resumption proceeds smoothly, actively backing efforts that can lead to local economic revitalization and expansion of the industrial ecosystem.

The city also indicated its intention to accelerate the comprehensive funeral service facility project. The Pyeongtaek Comprehensive Funeral Service Facility is designed to resolve inconveniences of Pyeongtaek citizens who are holding funerals outside the city, and the final construction site was selected last year based on resident opinion surveys, management of the construction promotion committee, and site feasibility studies. Pyeongtaek City plans to establish a foundation so that the comprehensive funeral service facility can be stably promoted through administrative procedures this year.
