Suwon Special City to operate 'Car-Free Street' in Haenggung-dong every Saturday from May
[Suwon Ilbo = Reporter Jung Jun-sung] A section of approximately 220 meters from 34 Hwaseo-mun-ro to 47 Shinpung-ro in Haenggung-dong, Suwon Special City will operate as a 'car-free street' every Saturday starting in May.
The operation hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday. During this time, vehicle traffic is restricted to create a pedestrian-focused street where citizens can walk safely and comfortably.
This regular operation was implemented following pilot operations in March and April, a survey conducted through Suwon City's civic participation platform 'Saebbit Talk Talk,' and continuous consultations with the neighborhood council and merchants association.
In the survey, over 80% of 1,980 respondents expressed satisfaction with the operation and answered that continuous operation is necessary.
In addition, through consultations with the neighborhood council and merchants association, the operation section was adjusted to 220 meters, and agreement was reached on a Saturday-only operation method, reflecting community opinions.
The city will deploy on-site management personnel to systematically implement traffic control and pedestrian safety management. Traffic controllers will be stationed at intersections to restrict external vehicle traffic. Emergency vehicles and residents' vehicles will be allowed to pass minimally.
Additionally, the city will operate a shared parking lot with approximately 100 spaces in cooperation with Samil Industrial High School, and will consult with nearby schools to reduce parking inconveniences for visitors.
The city plans to regularly consult with the neighborhood council and merchants association to assess operational results and develop improvement measures for creating a sustainable pedestrian environment.
A city official said, "The operation of the car-free street is the result of residents' and merchants' continuous efforts and consultations," and added, "We will strive to establish a pedestrian culture where people can safely enjoy the unique charm of Haenggung-dong's alleys."
