Suwon Launches "Sky Convenience Store" via Drone Delivery in Gwanggyo Area
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Jung Jun-sung] Suwon City has begun demonstration operations for drone delivery services.
On the 4th, the city held a "2026 Drone Demonstration City Construction Project Drone Delivery Service Demonstration" at the Suwon Drone Delivery Center in Gwanggyo Lake Park and showcased the drone delivery service.
During the demonstration, officials introduced the progress and operational plans for the drone delivery service and conducted a full-process demonstration of ordering items through a mobile web platform and having them delivered via drone from a distribution hub to designated delivery points.
Previously, Suwon City was selected in March for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "2026 Drone Demonstration City Construction Project" competition.
The city is now implementing the "Gwanggyo Promenade Drone Delivery Service with Sky Convenience Stores."
Two distribution hubs and eight delivery points have been established in the Gwanggyo Lake Park and Gwanggyo Reservoir areas.
This demonstration is intended to comprehensively verify the safety, public acceptance, and operational model of drone delivery.
Actual users can order beverages, snacks, and picnic supplies through the mobile web platform "Suwon Drone Delivery" and receive items via drone at designated delivery points.
Flight routes separated from pedestrian pathways are preset for automatic flight operations.
However, operations only proceed when real-time weather information regarding wind direction and rainfall conditions are favorable for flight.
The service will operate from August to November, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Starting with Gwanggyo Lake Park Entrance Plaza, Family Camping Area, and Water Promotion Center, the service plans to expand to a total of eight delivery points including Jaeminan Field, Jeonngdaun Restroom, Birch Tree Restroom, and Gwanggyo Reservoir Park.
During the pilot operation period in August, delivery fees will not be charged, and promotional gifts will be provided to customers placing orders.
Attendees of the demonstration included Choi Hyun-joo, head of Suwon Special City's AI Smart Policy Department, Bae Ji-hwan, chairman of the Urban Future Committee and city council members of Suwon Special City Council, Lee Byung-jin, president of the Suwon Urban Development Foundation, and residents from Woncheong-dong, Gwanggyo 1-dong, and Gwanggyo 2-dong.
Additionally, officials from Suwon Yeongdeungpo Police Station, Suwon Fire Department, and Drone School International participated to prepare for potential safety incidents.
A Suwon City official stated, "Suwon Drone Delivery," which operates in Gwanggyo Lake Park, is a citizen-oriented service that allows residents and tourists to conveniently receive needed items while enjoying walks and leisure," and added, "We will thoroughly verify the safety and convenience of drone delivery to establish it as a futuristic delivery service that citizens can experience in their daily lives."
