Gyeonggi Province Selects 15 Model Military Service Families, Including 3rd Generation Descendants of Student Soldiers
Gyeonggi Province has selected 15 families as '2026 Gyeonggi Province Model Military Service Honor Families,' including student soldiers who participated in the Korean War and their descendants across three generations.
The discovery of model military service honor families was established to pay tribute to families with exceptional military service records and contributions to local communities, chosen from among the military service honor families who have faithfully fulfilled their obligations across generations, serving as exemplary models for provincial residents.
Gyeonggi Province explained that it conducted selection committee reviews of 82 families that applied to the model military service honor family recruitment among the 2,580 military service honor families in the province, and ultimately selected 15 families.
Notably, the Kim Jae-ju family had 1st generation Kim Gap-sin serve as a student soldier during the Korean War. 2nd generation Kim Jae-ju served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years, was recognized as a national meritorious person, and received the Order of National Security. Subsequently, 3rd generation members Kim Min-ho, Kim Seon-ho, and Kim Gyeong-ho all voluntarily enlisted in the Marine Corps, faithfully fulfilling military service obligations across three generations.
The Lee Joo-sang family, descendants of independence activist Seokju Lee Sang-ryong, received high praise for carrying forward the spirit of independence movements and dedication to the nation across generations, with family members killed in action during the Korean War.
1st generation Lee Gyeong-dae served in the Army. 2nd generation members Lee Seok-jae, Lee Seok-hun, and Lee Seok-jin each served in the Capital Mechanized Infantry Division (Maengho Unit), Special Warfare Command, and Military Police Training Command respectively. 3rd generation Lee Ho-sang performed generator operation and maintenance duties in the 27th Infantry Division of the Army, and Lee Joo-sang performed parachute maintenance duties at the Special Warfare School under Special Warfare Command, with all three generations fulfilling their military obligations at their respective posts and continuing the family's spirit of national dedication.
The Kim Ho-gyeong family had 1st generation Kim Sung-soo participate as a guerrilla fighter in the 8240 unit during the Korean War. 2nd generation members Kim Han-gyeong served as an Army corporal for 32 months, Kim Il-woo as an Army sergeant for 26 months, and Kim Ho-gyeong as an Army sergeant for 27 months. Kim Ho-gyeong also contributed to preserving historical records by donating a copy of the Korean War armistice draft to the nation. Subsequently, 3rd generation Kim Dae-woo served as an Army sergeant for 20 months, and Kim Min-woo as an Army sergeant for 18 months, continuing the tradition of national dedication and military service fulfillment across three generations.
Cho Gwang-geun, Gyeonggi Province's Emergency Planning Officer, stated, "We selected families as model military service honor families that not only uphold the tradition of military service across generations protecting the nation, but also practice volunteer service and sharing for the local community together. We will continue to show respect so that families who have faithfully fulfilled their military obligations take pride in their service and the value of their dedication becomes widely known among provincial residents."
