Hwaseong Special City Issues Access Restriction on Retaining Wall Collapse in Donghwa-ri, Bongdam-eup…Analyzing Cause
Hwaseong Special City has launched emergency on-site inspections and safety measures in response to a partial collapse of a reinforced earth retaining wall approximately 10 meters in height that occurred in the Donghwa-ri, Bongdam-eup area of Hyohang-gu.
According to the city, a report of the accident was received through the emergency call center at around 8 p.m. on the 3rd, and on-site confirmation showed that part of the retaining wall on private property had collapsed, but there were no casualties.
Following the accident, Hwaseong Special City dispatched relevant departments to the scene and implemented emergency safety measures including access restrictions, safety barrier installation, hazard zone blockage, and traffic control in surrounding areas. In consideration of possible ground weakening due to recent rainfall, the city is conducting inspections of both the collapsed section and other retaining walls, focusing on preventing additional secondary damage.
Yoon Sung-jin, First Vice Mayor of Hwaseong Special City, visited the scene in person to inspect the damage situation and safety conditions, and confirmed with related officials the scope of collapse, impact on adjacent facilities, residents' inconvenience, and emergency response status. Vice Mayor Yoon instructed response personnel to prioritize citizen safety, promptly eliminate risk factors, and thoroughly maintain inspections and on-site control of potentially vulnerable collapse areas.
The city plans to first implement safety measures, conduct a joint inspection by structural engineers and relevant departments to carefully analyze the cause of the collapse, and comprehensively review whether repairs, reinforcement, or reconstruction are necessary.
"The most important thing right now is to prevent additional damage and quickly secure on-site safety," said First Vice Mayor Yoon Sung-jin, adding, "We will do our utmost to manage the scene until all risk factors are completely eliminated."
