Lee Dong-gi Appointed to Suwon Deputy Mayor Post After 10-Month Vacancy; to Take Office on 14th
Lee Dong-gi, former chairperson of the Democratic Party's Sokcho, Inje, Goseong, and Yangyang regional committee, will assume the position of Suwon Deputy Mayor, which has remained vacant for nearly 10 months.
According to Suwon City and other sources on the 11th, the newly appointed deputy mayor is scheduled to take office officially on the 14th. The city launched a public recruitment for the open-position deputy mayor post in July, completed document and interview screening, and confirmed the final successful candidate on the 18th of last month.
The Suwon Deputy Mayor position has been vacant for approximately 10 months since former Deputy Mayor Hyun Geun-taek stepped down at the end of last year to run in the June 3 local elections. With Lee Dong-gi deputy mayor's inauguration, Suwon City's prolonged "single deputy mayor system" will also be resolved.
Deputy Mayor Lee was born in August 1974 and earned a master's degree in political science, majoring in political and administrative leadership, from Yonsei University Graduate School of Public Administration.
Before entering politics, he engaged in anti-corruption and information disclosure campaigns in civil society. He served as secretary-general of the Sokcho, Goseong, and Yangyang headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Citizens Coalition and participated in lawsuits demanding the disclosure of operation expenses from local government heads and provincial assembly speakers. He subsequently served as special committee chairperson for Seorak Mountain development in the Uri Party and worked as an administrative official in the Presidential Secretariat under the Roh Moo-hyun administration.
In the Democratic Party, he held positions including chairperson of the Sokcho, Inje, Goseong, and Yangyang regional committee, vice chair of the Policy Committee, and director of the Democratic Research Institute. He also worked in former President Moon Jae-in's presidential campaign committee and served as a citizen communication special committee member of the National Balanced Development Committee under the Moon Jae-in administration.
He also has experience related to public institutions. His major career positions include director of the Construction Industry Information Institute, non-standing director of the Korea Mine Rehabilitation Corporation, and integrity citizen auditor of the Korea Federation of SMEs.
In particular, Deputy Mayor Lee is classified as a close associate of President Lee Jae-myung from outside the political sphere. In the 21st presidential election, he served as deputy director of the political affairs division 2 of Lee Jae-myung's Democratic Party central election campaign committee. In local communities, he is known to have maintained a political relationship since President Lee's tenure as Seongnam mayor and Gyeonggi Province governor.
