Professor Seo Kyung-duk Calls for Social Media Reports... "Bring Rising Sun Flag Cheering at Asian Games to Global Public Attention"

Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University expressed concerns on social media on the 19th, stating, "The Rising Sun flag cheering from Japan may appear at the 2026 Aichi and Nagoya Asian Games, which began today."

Professor Seo noted that "the Rising Sun flag was prominently displayed when Japan invaded various Asian nations, including during the Pacific War, and symbolizes militarism and imperialism," adding that "Japan has repeatedly engaged in Rising Sun flag cheering at international sports events, causing major controversies."

Professor Seo wrote, "During the FIFA North and Central American World Cup, Japanese supporters were criticized for displaying the Rising Sun flag inside and outside the stadium. During the Tokyo Olympics, there was also controversy when the Rising Sun flag was spotted during track cycling events."

Professor Seo urged, "If you spot Rising Sun flag cheering during the Asian Games at the venue or through broadcast coverage, please report it to my social media account without fail."

Professor Seo stated, "I will use this as a good opportunity to raise awareness among major international media outlets and foreign athletes about the problems with using the Rising Sun flag."
