'How to Live with Dignity in an Age of Hate'... Suwon Citizens' Human Rights Academy Held

Suwon Special City (Mayor Lee Jae-jun) is recruiting participants for the '2026 Suwon Citizens' Human Rights Academy.'

The Suwon Citizens' Human Rights Academy, themed 'How to Live with Dignity in an Age of Hate?', will operate a total of six sessions from October 14 to November 18 at the Suwon City Hall conference room. Each session runs for two hours starting at 7:30 p.m.

Participants will examine issues of hate, discrimination, and inequality from a humanistic perspective, engage in discussions, and explore the values of dignity and solidarity. Suwon City has organized the human rights academy to provide all citizens with an opportunity to participate in human rights education and grow as democratic citizens.

The first session (October 14) will be held as a talk concert themed 'Stories from Those Affected.' Park Dong-chan, director of the Gyeonggyein Research Institute, Kim Ho-kyung, a bereaved family member of the Itaewon disaster victims, and a future activist from Suwon Women's Phone will participate and share stories on immigrant rights, disaster victims, and women's discrimination.

The second session (October 21) features a lecture by Choi Ho-geun, professor of history at Korea University. Under the theme 'Language of Hate, Normalization of Discrimination,' he will examine the social and ideological backgrounds of hate and discrimination.

The 'Suwon Citizens' Human Rights Academy' is a public-private cooperation program jointly promoted by Suwon City and human rights organizations from planning to operation and evaluation through a citizen human rights education planning committee. The planning committee participates in each lecture as 'facilitators' to help citizens better understand human rights and participate in questions and discussions.

A Suwon City official said, "We hope this human rights academy will be an opportunity to reflect on issues of hate and discrimination together with citizens, understand each other's dignity, and demonstrate solidarity. We ask for active participation from interested citizens."
