Osan City Emphasizes Thorough Prevention of Safety Accidents During Thawing Season
Osan City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Gwak Sang-uk) held its March monthly briefing on the morning of the 4th in the city hall conference room, with some 500 public officials including senior civil servants in attendance.
The briefing proceeded with video education on "the significance and importance of budget waste reporting," training on "personal computer security usage guidance," presentations of research achievements by five teams from the civic policy research group "Saenggak-Botari," followed by commendations for citizens and staff members.
Mayor Gwak Sang-uk offered congratulations to the commended citizens and staff members, saying, "I commend the hard work of staff members who did their best in promoting projects including the Lunar New Year's Eve celebration in February and the dong tug-of-war competition," and urged, "As 2014 has already moved into March, I hope each of you will fulfill your responsibilities in your respective positions so that policy tasks and major pending issues can proceed without any omissions."
He further urged efforts to focus on March priorities including preparations for the 200th Osan City Council extraordinary session, promotion of safety management measures for disaster-vulnerable facilities during the thawing season, and promotion of spring environmental improvements.
During the thawing season when winter transitions into spring, repeated ground freezing and thawing phenomena increase accident risks significantly due to cracks and ground subsidence in retaining walls, old embankments, and aging houses.
An official from the city's Safety Coordination Division stated, "During the thawing season, it is necessary to pay close and careful attention to dangerous facilities with collapse risks in the areas around residents' daily lives," and urged, "When hazards are discovered, please promptly report them to the nearest dong community center or Osan City's Safety Coordination Division (031-8036-7787)."
