Yongin Citizens to Receive Free Fitness Assessments at Yongin University Fitness Certification Center
Yongin Special City announced plans to open the 'Yongin Fitness Certification Center' by year-end to help citizens improve their physical fitness. On the 28th, the city signed a memorandum of understanding with Yongin University at the city hall reception room.
The agreement follows the city's selection in March as a target institution for the 'National Fitness 100' project, overseen by the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, securing approximately 103.89 million won from the Korea Sports Promotion Fund. The 'National Fitness 100' project is a free public sports welfare service that scientifically measures and evaluates citizens' physical fitness, then provides exercise counseling and prescriptions in accordance with the National Sports Promotion Act, with the aim of promoting national health and fitness.
The signing ceremony was attended by approximately 10 officials from both organizations, including Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il and Yongin University President Park Yun-kyu.
Under the agreement, Yongin University will establish the Yongin Fitness Certification Center on the third floor of the College of Sports Science and oversee overall center operations utilizing the university's expertise in sports and health. The city will handle necessary administrative procedures for center establishment and operation, and will provide approximately 207.79 million won needed for operations by splitting costs equally between the Korea Sports Promotion Fund and municipal budget.
Both organizations plan to deploy five specialized personnel—one administrative staff, two health exercise managers, and two fitness assessors—by November, complete interior facility maintenance, and officially open the center in December.
At the center, citizens aged four and older can receive free fitness assessments in health-related and performance-related categories, obtain fitness certifications, and utilize customized exercise prescriptions and fitness enhancement classes. The city plans to open the center early in the morning on weekdays and flexibly on weekends, offering free shuttle bus service and parking fee exemptions. For citizens unable to visit, the center will also operate mobile fitness assessment services and fitness measurement services for vulnerable populations.
Mayor Lee stated, "It was regrettable that Yongin Special City, which has developed in many fields, lacked a fitness certification center. Through today's agreement, we are pleased to realize sports welfare for our citizens. I hope that Yongin University, which represents South Korea in sports, will help citizens manage their health with professional and excellent guidance. The city will make every effort to provide administrative support so that many citizens can utilize sports services here and lead healthy lives."
President Park said, "Health has become a major topic in modern times, so much so that we exchange greetings and hope for each other's well-being. I am grateful to the city for this opportunity, allowing Yongin University to operate Yongin's first fitness certification center. We will operate the center substantively to help citizens improve their physical fitness."
