Suwon City to Begin Installing Unmanned Speed Cameras in School Zones from Second Half of This Year

[Suwon Ilbo=Correspondent Seo Dong-young] Following the recent implementation of the so-called 'Minshik's Law,' which mandates the installation of speed cameras in child protection zones (school zones) and requires local government heads to prioritize the installation of traffic signals, Suwon City has decided to install unmanned surveillance cameras in all elementary school zones throughout the city over three years beginning in the second half of this year.

The city plans to complete the installation of surveillance cameras in nine elementary school zones or adjacent to school zones this year. The project cost totals 333 million won, comprising 165 million won in national funds and 165 million won in city funds.

The list of nine elementary schools has been submitted to the relevant police precinct. Following on-site inspections by the police precinct, the Gyeonggi Southern Regional Police Agency will make a final decision on installation based on relevant standards including traffic volume and enforcement rate.

In addition to installing unmanned surveillance cameras, the city is making various efforts to ensure child commuting safety.

On the 21st, the city completed expansion work on the school passage in front of Ilwol Elementary School in Gwonseon-gu. The passage, which was only 1 to 1.2 meters wide over a 40-meter section, posed pedestrian inconvenience and potential risk of child traffic accidents. The city utilized Ilwol Elementary School property to expand the width to 3 meters and planted vegetation.

Beyond Ilwol Elementary School, the city is reviewing implementation of passage expansion projects at other elementary schools requiring such improvements.
