Suwon to Begin Installing Unmanned Speed Enforcement Cameras in School Zones from Second Half of This Year
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] With the recent enforcement of the so-called 'Minshik's Law,' which mandates the installation of speeding cameras in child protection zones (school zones) and requires local government heads to prioritize installing traffic lights, Suwon City has decided to install unmanned speed enforcement cameras in all elementary school zones within the city over a three-year period starting from the second half of this year.
The city initially plans to complete installation of speed cameras at nine elementary schools' school zones or surrounding areas this year. The project cost is 3.3 billion won in total, comprising 165 million won in national funding and 165 million won in city funding.
The list of nine elementary schools has been submitted to the respective police precincts. Following on-site inspections by the police precincts, the Gyeonggi Southern Regional Police Agency will make a final decision on installation based on relevant standards including traffic volume and enforcement rates.
In addition to installing unmanned speed cameras, the city is making various efforts to ensure children's commute safety.
On the 21st, the city completed expansion work on the commute route in front of Ilwol Elementary School in Gwonseon-gu. The commute route, a 40-meter section only 1 to 1.2 meters wide, presented pedestrian difficulties and posed a risk of child traffic accidents. In response, the city expanded the route to 3 meters wide using Ilwol Elementary School's grounds and planted trees.
In addition to Ilwol Elementary School, the city is reviewing implementation of projects for other elementary schools requiring commute route expansion.
