Suwon City Council Vice Chairman Kim Ki-jung Calls for Full Reconsideration of Private Sale of Mangpo Station Development Site
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Seo Dong-young] During the second plenary session of the 355th extraordinary session held on the 23rd, Suwon City Council Vice Chairman Kim Ki-jung argued for a complete reconsideration of the private sale of the Mangpo Station complex development project site through a five-minute free speech. Vice Chairman Kim Ki-jung stated, "Suwon City and Suwon Urban Development Corporation claim there is no problem whatsoever with the private sale of the Mangpo Station complex development project site as they have adhered to legal procedures." He added, "However, for a policy and project to be authoritative, it must go beyond legal procedures and undergo diverse citizen opinion collection and social discussion leading to consensus. This is also connected to Suwon City's future vision as a citizen-participatory city." Regarding Suwon Urban Development Corporation's plan to develop the site through a competitive private development method to resolve parking shortages in the Youngtong area and create cultural spaces and attract key commercial tenants, Vice Chairman Kim pointed out, "The construction of public parking lots in the basement of complex center buildings to solve parking shortage in Youngtong area is exclusively for complex center residents and visitors, not for residents of Youngtong and Mangpo-dong. The connection corridor with Mangpo Station is likewise a facility for the complex center." Vice Chairman Kim stated, "Small business owners and self-employed individuals are already facing considerable difficulties due to COVID-19, and once the complex center is built, the surrounding commercial district will inevitably decline." He urged, "Suwon City should sufficiently gather opinions from Suwon City Council, civic organizations, and residents to proceed with the Mangpo Station complex development project."
