Yongin City Supports TNR (Neuter-Return) Program to Control Stray Cat Population
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park No-hun] Yongin City announced on the 14th that it will implement a neutering (TNR) program for stray cats through November to control the growing population of stray cats in the city.
The initiative aims to prevent the stray cat population, which naturally reproduces in urban areas and residential neighborhoods, from growing excessively and to create an environment where humans and stray cats can coexist.
As territorial animals, cats breed twice a year and give birth to multiple kittens at a time, so if left unchecked, the population continues to grow. Additionally, stray cats are frequently hit by vehicles in urban areas, which not only threatens the cats' lives but also endangers driver safety.
The stray cat neutering program involves capturing cats, performing neutering surgery, and releasing them back to their original locations after recovery.
In response, the city operates a KakaoTalk Plus channel where residents can request stray cat neutering at any time.
Residents who discover stray cats in their neighborhoods or are experiencing difficulties due to stray cats can search for 'Yongin Stray Cat Neutering Center' on the KakaoTalk Plus channel and report or inquire about the issue.
There may be a certain waiting period before a capture date is scheduled, and operations are suspended during extreme cold periods (June 15 to August 15) and extreme heat periods (December 1 to February 15).
The city has neutered and released 4,654 stray cats found in the area over the past three years. This year, the city plans to support neutering surgery for approximately 2,000 stray cats.
Additionally, the city is producing and distributing banners and vehicle stickers to prevent stray cat road deaths.
Banners are installed in areas where residents frequently report road deaths, and stickers can be obtained from the Animal Protection Team by phone request and can be picked up at the center or each district office.
