Gyeonggi Province to Support Military Personnel Deployed at Disaster Sites with Injury Insurance

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kim Gap-dong] Gyeonggi Province is planning to support injury insurance enrollment not only for military personnel who are residents of the province, but also for military personnel mobilized to assist in disaster recovery operations in Gyeonggi Province.

On the 29th, the province held a '2024 Government-Military Policy Seminar and Workshop' at Sonokamhada in Goyang, attended by approximately 80 people including Gyeonggi Province Assembly members, officials in charge of government-military cooperation from the provincial and municipal governments, and military unit officials. The province discussed these matters at the event.

This initiative is in accordance with the 'Ordinance on the Safety and Support of Military Personnel in Gyeonggi Province Disaster Recovery Assistance' passed on the 26th.

The ordinance, the first of its kind nationwide, includes provisions whereby the provincial governor coordinates with military units, the Fire and Disaster Management Headquarters, and integrated volunteer support teams at disaster sites to conduct safety education for military personnel mobilized to disaster recovery sites, deploy safety specialists at the scene, and support injury insurance enrollment for military personnel mobilized to assist in disaster recovery.

Based on this ordinance, the province will pursue injury insurance support for military personnel assisting in disaster recovery separately from the existing 'Military Service Gyeonggi Youth Injury Insurance Support Project.'

Since November 2018, the province has been the first metropolitan autonomous government in the nation to provide injury insurance support, allowing military personnel youth with resident registrations in the province to receive insurance benefits according to the type of injury during military service without a separate enrollment process.

With these coverage provisions, the province decided to extend support not only to military personnel residents but also to those mobilized to assist in disaster recovery operations in Gyeonggi Province, given that the province has the largest number of military personnel and has received various forms of public support.

The province plans to secure the necessary budget in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Province Assembly before summer, when public support is needed for heavy rain and other disasters.

Yun Sung-jin, Director of Balanced Development Planning at the province, said, "Through close cooperation between local governments and the military, we will work to resolve regional issues, harmoniously coordinate national security and regional development needs, and jointly consider and improve ways to revitalize regional development."
