Gyeonggi Province Pushes to Support Injury Insurance for Military Personnel Mobilized at Disaster Sites

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kim Gap-dong] Gyeonggi Province is pursuing injury insurance support not only for military personnel who are residents of the province, but also for military personnel mobilized to support disaster recovery operations in Gyeonggi Province.

On the 29th, the province held a '2024 Government-Military Policy Seminar and Workshop' at Sonokam Goyang, attended by approximately 80 people including members of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, government officials in charge of government-military cooperation from the province and municipal governments, and military unit officials. The matter was discussed at this meeting.

This project is in accordance with the 'Ordinance on the Safety and Support of Military Personnel in Gyeonggi Province's Disaster Recovery Operations,' which was passed on the 26th.

The ordinance, a first nationwide initiative, includes provisions for the provincial governor to work in conjunction with military units, the Fire and Disaster Headquarters, and integrated volunteer support groups at disaster sites to conduct safety education for military personnel mobilized to disaster recovery sites, deploy safety professionals at the scene, and support injury insurance enrollment for military personnel mobilized to support disaster recovery operations.

Based on this ordinance, the province will pursue injury insurance enrollment support for military personnel supporting disaster recovery as a separate initiative from the existing 'Military Service Gyeonggi Youth Injury Insurance Support Project.'

Since November 2018, the province has been the first metropolitan local government nationwide to support injury insurance enrollment, allowing young military personnel with resident registration in the province to receive insurance payments according to the type of injury during military service without additional enrollment procedures.

With these coverage provisions, in light of Gyeonggi Province's characteristics of having the largest number of military personnel serving and receiving various civilian support, the province decided to extend support to military personnel mobilized for disaster recovery operations in the province, not just provincial residents serving in the military.

The province plans to secure related budgets in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly before summer, when civilian support is needed for heavy rainfall and other disasters.

Yoon Sung-jin, Director of the Province's Balanced Development Planning Office, stated, "Through close cooperation between local governments and the military, we will work to resolve regional issues, harmoniously coordinate national security and regional development needs, and improve measures to revitalize regional development."
