Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myung-geun: "I Will Actively Pursue Policies Needed for Women"
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park Chan-hyuk] On March 7, the day before International Women's Day (March 8), Hwaseong Special City Mayor Jeong Myung-geun presented bread and roses to female employees arriving at City Hall.
The 117th anniversary of International Women's Day originates from March 8, 1908, when American women workers staged a massive demonstration demanding political equality and wage increases. Bread symbolizes the survival rights of women workers, and roses symbolize voting rights.
Mayor Jeong, who hosted the Women's Day event for the second consecutive year, said, "We organized today's event to promote the value of gender equality based on mutual respect," and added, "Like the spirit of this year's Women's Day slogan, Accelerate Action, we will create a gender-equal environment through active policies."
Meanwhile, the city was designated as a Woman-Friendly City in 2023. Additionally, it garnered attention by being the sole basic local government unit to receive the Grand Prize in the 2023 Gyeonggi Province Gender Equality Award, which is given to individuals and organizations that contribute to gender equality.
Furthermore, the Hwaseong Women's New Start Center was the only one among 130 nationwide New Start Centers to be selected as an excellent service provider institution, achieving the distinction of receiving the 2024 Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Award. Additionally, the Women's Entrepreneurship Platform "Kkummaroo," operated by the Hwaseong City Women and Family Youth Foundation, won the Grand Prize and Excellence Award consecutively at the Gyeonggi Women's Business Competition in 2023 and 2024, demonstrating exceptional capabilities.
Mayor Jeong said, "This year as well, Hwaseong Special City will actively discover and implement policies needed for women in keeping with the status of a woman-friendly city and a special city," and added, "We will work together to ensure that all genders can enjoy equal rights and opportunities in society."
