Hwaseong Special City Holds Unveiling Ceremony for Historic Marker at Former Dongtan-myeon Office Site

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Park Chan-hyuk] Hwaseong Special City installed a historic marker at the former site of Dongtan-myeon office at 996-4 Osan-dong on the 4th and held an unveiling ceremony.

The event was attended by approximately 100 people, including Mayor Jung Myung-geun, National Assemblyman Lee Jun-seok, Hwaseong Culture Center Director Yu Ji-seon, heads of regional organizations and civic groups, and residents, who gathered to reflect on the historical significance of Dongtan-myeon office as the birthplace of regional administration and community.

The historic marker was installed to commemorate the historical significance of Dongtan-myeon as an administrative hub and starting point for regional development, and to honor its value as the origin of today's Dongtan New City.

The site where the marker was installed is believed to be where the myeon office was located after Dongtan-myeon was newly established in 1914 through the merger of Dongbuk-myeon and Eottan-myeon, and it served as the administrative center until the Dongtan-myeon office was relocated to Banggyo-ri (now Banggyo-dong) in 2012, following the construction of a new building in 1990.

The front of the marker bears an inscription indicating that this was the location of the Dongtan-myeon office, while the back displays a map of Dongtan-myeon along with a brief history of the myeon. Additionally, an informational sign detailing the history of Dongtan and the origins of village names has been installed near the marker.

The city plans to preserve historical traces of the region through this marker unveiling and work to establish regional identity that does not forget its roots amid the growth of the new city.

Mayor Jung Myung-geun stated in his remarks, "This site, where the administrative office of Dongtan-myeon with over 100 years of history was located, is the root and identity of Dongtan's remarkable development today," and added, "I hope that this place, where a new future unfolds from the foundation of the past, will be remembered with pride by our citizens."
