Pyeongtaek City Welcomes Final Passage of 'Pyeongtaek Support Special Act'

[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Kim Gap-dong] Pyeongtaek City announced that it "welcomes wholeheartedly with the 660,000 residents of Pyeongtaek" regarding the amended bill of the 'Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek City, etc. Following the Relocation of U.S. Forces in Korea (hereinafter, the Pyeongtaek Support Special Act)' being finally promulgated on the 9th.

As a result, the validity period of the Special Act, which was set to expire at the end of this year, has completed final legal procedures with a four-year extension through December 31, 2030.

Accordingly, the city has secured momentum to resolve concerns about administrative and financial gaps and to continue promoting key projects such as the establishment of Godeok International School and the creation of large-scale industrial complexes without interruption.

The Pyeongtaek Support Special Act, enacted in 2004, has been extended three times so far for U.S. Forces relocation and resident support projects. However, the need for legal extension has been continuously raised to stably complete some projects being pursued for regional development and the U.S. Forces in Korea relocation project.

Mayor Jung Jang-seon stated, "I express deep gratitude to the local parliamentarians and related departments including the Ministry of National Defense who joined forces from the plenary passage through state council deliberation to final promulgation," and added, "This confirmation of the Special Act extension will be a decisive turning point for Pyeongtaek to leap forward as a true international peace city with a sustainable growth foundation, transcending its role as a security city."
