Jo Hui-yeon and Jo Yong-sik Seek Path to Educational Autonomy Through Freire's Educational Reform Experiment…Forum on 10th

Former Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Jo Hui-yeon and Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Jo Yong-sik will hold a forum on the 10th to explore measures for advancing educational autonomy by examining Brazilian educational thinker Paulo Freire's educational reform experiment.
The forum will be held at 2 p.m. on the 10th at the Conference Hall on the 3rd floor of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. It is co-hosted by the Community Education Forum, the Korean Education Research Network, the Korean Education Reform Strategy Forum, and the Garden of Coexistence, and is supported by the Seoul, Ulsan, and Jeju Metropolitan Offices of Education and Community Education Television. All those interested are welcome to participate.
The keynote address will be given by Seoul National University Professor Yu Sung-sang. Professor Yu plans to present on the educational reform experiment that Freire promoted while serving as superintendent of education in São Paulo, Brazil. Freire, widely known as the author of 『Pedagogy of the Oppressed』, served as superintendent of education in São Paulo from 1989 and experimented with public education reform linked to the lives of the people in actual administration. As a rare case of an educational theorist serving as the head of an educational administration and translating theory into practice, he is a model repeatedly invoked in discussions on educational autonomy.
Following the keynote, former Superintendent Jo Hui-yeon and Superintendent Jo Yong-sik will serve as discussants. The two will examine the current state of educational autonomy in Korea and development tasks by using Freire's experiment as a mirror.
An official related to the forum stated, "This is an occasion to explore measures for advancing educational autonomy in the current period by examining the educational reform experiment of Freire, who was an educational superintendent in Brazil."
