AI Crosswalk Installed at Baekam Elementary—Social Contribution Bears Fruit

A completion ceremony for an artificial intelligence (AI) smart crosswalk and yellow carpet project was held at Baekam Elementary School in Baekam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin Special City.
The completion ceremony held on site on the 22nd was attended by Hwang Jun-gi, Second Vice Mayor of Yongin Special City; Jang Han-gyu, Senior Vice President of SK Ecoplanet; Park Chan-gyeong, Center Director of Green Umbrella's Social Contribution Cooperation Division; and Lee Gyeong-ho, Principal of Baekam Elementary School.
This project was established to create a safe school commute environment for children and other mobility-vulnerable populations through social contribution activities by SK Ecoplanet and the Green Umbrella organization in collaboration with the local community. In July, Yongin Special City and the two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding related to the project.
As part of its social contribution initiatives, SK Ecoplanet built an advanced traffic system in response to increased vehicle traffic in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, enabling both children and drivers to easily perceive traffic situations.
The artificial intelligence (AI) smart crosswalk installed at Baekam Elementary is a traffic facility that uses video analysis and traffic safety technology to analyze in real-time the movements of pedestrians and vehicles, pedestrian signals, and surrounding conditions.
The yellow carpet is a facility that marks the ground and walls at the crosswalk entrance with yellow or installs yellow structures to guide children to wait for signals in a safe space.
Park Chan-gyeong, Center Director of Green Umbrella's Social Contribution Cooperation Division, stated, "A safe school route for children is the most basic environment for protecting daily life" and "We will create an environment where children can grow safely and healthily."
Jang Han-gyu, Senior Vice President of SK Ecoplanet, said, "Through this project, we anticipate creating an environment where children can commute more safely" and "Going forward, we will continue to pursue social contribution activities in collaboration with the local community for children's traffic safety and the future generation."
Hwang Jun-gi, Second Vice Mayor of Yongin Special City, stated, "The installation of advanced traffic safety facilities through this collaboration is expected to greatly contribute to securing pedestrian safety for children around Baekam Elementary School and preventing traffic accidents."
