Major international news outlets including Reuters, AP, and AFP urgently transmitted reports on the 24th citing South Korean government authorities and media reports regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's visit to China.
According to the foreign news reports, Kim Jong Un arrived in Dandong on the day via the New Yalu River Bridge connecting North Korea's Sinuiju and China's Dandong in Liaoning Province. Japan's Kyodo News reported that strict traffic control was implemented on major roads in Dandong, near the New Yalu River Bridge, and around the Museum of Chinese People's Volunteers Participation, while accommodation reservations at some local hotels have been restricted.
International news outlets presented multi-faceted analyses on the background and diplomatic significance of this visit to China.
The AP characterized this move as North Korea's attempt to pursue economic recovery through improved relations with China following recent close ties with Russia, and to build a joint front against the United States. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) and HK01 noted the use of the New Yalu River Bridge, which officially opened on the 15th after 12 years of completion, and projected it to become a major corridor for expanded bilateral trade and logistics in the future.
The British Guardian and others dismissed recent health concerns and death rumors that had spread primarily through overseas social media, and reported that Kim Jong Un demonstrated the soundness of state governance through diplomatic movements.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that it requested an official response from China's Foreign Ministry regarding the matter but did not receive an immediate response, and added that an official announcement from Chinese authorities or confirmation of a summit meeting between Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping has yet to be confirmed.
