Gwangmyeong Designated as 'Environmental Education City' for Second Consecutive Term...Citizen Participation in Education Recognized

Gwangmyeong City (Mayor Park Seung-won) has been selected as the final winner in the '2026 Environmental Education City' competition hosted by the Ministry of Climate Energy and Environment for the second consecutive time, with its status as an Environmental Education City recognized for citizen-led environmental education achievements and continuing from next year through 2029.
The Environmental Education City designation is a system that designates and supports local governments with excellent environmental education plans and implementation records and well-established environmental education infrastructure, in accordance with the 'Act on Promotion and Support of Environmental Education.' This time, a total of 10 entities were selected, including 3 metropolitan local governments and 7 basic local governments.
The city has applied its accumulated lifelong learning capabilities accumulated as the nation's first lifelong learning city to environmental education, implemented lifecycle-based education, and built expertise in environmental education through operating the Gwangmyeong Environmental Education Center, supporting environmental learning groups, and operating the environmental education network 'EcoNet.'

The city has pursued citizen participation-type projects such as operating Environmental Education Weeks and 'Climate Ambassador Carbon Piggy Bank' which practice resource circulation and energy conservation in daily life, enabling learning about the environment to lead to practice in everyday life.
Based on these achievements, the city is establishing the second Gwangmyeong Environmental Education Plan to be continued from 2027 through 2031.
Mayor Park Seung-won of Gwangmyeong said, "This is a result of our city and local community working together to broaden consensus and practice foundations for realizing carbon neutrality," and added, "We will further solidify a virtuous cycle structure where citizens' learning leads to practice in daily life, and those practices collectively realize carbon neutrality."
