An "education budget report card" showing how much each of the 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province invests annually in education will be publicly disclosed for the first time.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced the results of its analysis of education investment status by city and county based on the 2026 fiscal budgets of the 31 basic local governments within the province, and stated on the 27th that it plans to regularly release this information annually going forward.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education's analysis was conducted by calculating from multiple angles the proportion of budgets allocated to education-related projects and co-investment projects with the provincial education office out of each municipality's total budget. According to the analysis results, a significant disparity was confirmed to exist in the education budget investment ratios and amounts by local government.
Based on the 2026 fiscal budgets, the municipalities with the highest proportion of education budgets to total budgets were found to be Bucheon (2.52%) and Hanam. These were followed by Seongnam, Uiwang, and Yongin in terms of education budget investment ratio. Additionally, in the field of independent education project budget ratios that municipalities independently plan and operate, Gwacheon, Seongnam, and Siheung placed among the top.
Meanwhile, some cities and counties showed education budget ratios of 1% or less, revealing a marked difference in local educational finance infrastructure.
An official from the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education stated, "Through the education budget disclosure system, we will encourage municipalities to voluntarily expand education finance and work to narrow the education investment gap," adding "We will provide municipalities demonstrating strong commitment to education investment with enhanced administrative and financial support linked to the provincial education office's strategic projects."
Meanwhile, the provincial education office plans to go beyond simply disclosing budget ratios and will further advance its analytical methods to multidimensionally reflect actual regional education needs, including student population and per-capita education investment, in the future.
