Gwangmyeong's 'Eco-Friendly Delivery Model' Gains Attention as Government K-GX Best Practice

The eco-friendly delivery culture model created by Gwangmyeong City (Mayor Park Seung-won) drew nationwide attention at the "Korean-style Green Great Transformation (K-GX) Strategy National Briefing."
The city announced on the 16th that its "Eco-Friendly Delivery Culture Value Chain Construction" project, which it has been promoting since early this year, was introduced as a best practice of a signature project in the transportation sector at the national briefing held on the 7th.
The "Eco-Friendly Delivery Culture Value Chain Construction" project is one of the projects Gwangmyeong City is promoting after being selected for the "Small and Medium-sized Smart City Development Project" in the 2024 Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport competition. It focuses on reducing carbon emissions, noise, and exhaust fumes generated during delivery by promoting the use and supply of electric two-wheelers and expanding the use of reusable containers.
To enhance the project's effectiveness, the city signed a business agreement with Woowa Brothers (operator of Baedal Minjok), LG Energy Solution, and Itgreen in March and has been implementing the project.
It is meaningful that the discussion on carbon neutrality in the transportation sector, previously centered on automobiles, has been expanded to the delivery culture sector.
To reduce the initial financial burden on delivery workers, the city provides 91 delivery electric two-wheelers for free rental. Additionally, it has installed around 10 battery swap stations (BSS) at key locations, significantly improving the inconvenience of charging. These stations are open to the general public to broaden the foundation for supplying and using electric two-wheelers in the city.
To reduce single-use products, the city supplies reusable containers to approximately 150 businesses in the area, and the used containers are operated in a circular structure through a specialized recovery and cleaning system for reuse.
Mayor Park Seung-won of Gwangmyeong said, "We must continue to expand the scope of carbon neutrality practice to match a rapidly changing society," adding, "We will establish infrastructure and conditions where anyone in the local community—citizens, small business owners, and companies—can participate in carbon neutrality, and we will achieve substantial carbon reduction in various sectors."
Meanwhile, "Korean-style Green Great Transformation (K-GX)" is a national strategy to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality and economic growth in response to the climate crisis. The government is discovering and implementing major signature projects to reduce carbon emissions and create new growth engines in various sectors including industry, energy, and transportation.
