Neighbors Caring for Neighbors...Community-Led Crisis Response Initiatives in Full Swing

A community crisis response initiative is gaining full momentum, with residents stepping up to directly address safety issues that are difficult for administrative authorities to reach.
Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Province Village Community Support Center held a 'Community-Led Village Crisis Response Project Performance Sharing Meeting' at Seojeong University on the 28th. The event covered outcomes from the project implemented in three villages in Yangju City this year and discussed future development strategies.
The community crisis response project aims to complement the limitations of public relief and establish a mutual care system among neighbors and a resident-led crisis response framework. The project began in 2024 and has been carried out in seven villages across five cities to date.
This year, residents from three villages in Yangju City—Nammeyon, Gwangjjeokmeyon, and Hoecheon 1-dong—participated in the project, directly investigating risk factors and crisis types in their respective villages and developing solutions.
In Nammeyon and Hoecheon 1-dong, elderly residents and those with mobility difficulties were connected with factory workers in the village to establish a system for regular check-ins and preparedness for various emergency situations. In Gwangjjeokmeyon, foreign residents, resident associations, and merchants worked together to create a community safety network to respond to fires in traditional markets.
Song Eun-sil, Director of the Social Innovation Economy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This is a project that confirmed the potential of community-led crisis response combining residents' voluntary solidarity and the expertise of universities. We plan to continue supporting the stable establishment of daily care among neighbors and community-level safety networks."
Students from the Nursing and Emergency Medicine departments of Seojeong University, along with the Gyeonggi Province Village Community Support Center, participated in supporting customized village crisis response activities.
