Cancer Center to Be Built at Yongin Severance Hospital
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Choi Ki-ho] A cancer center will be built at Yonsei University's Yongin Severance Hospital located in Jung-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin Special City.
On the 14th, the city announced that it has recently approved the architectural permit for construction (expansion) that Yonsei University applied for to establish a cancer center and faculty research building at plots including 1151 Jung-dong 1, Giheung-gu.
The scale of the architectural permit approved by the city expands the existing land area from 72,690㎡ to 96,824㎡ (an increase of 24,134㎡), and the total floor area from 112,474㎡ to 127,115㎡ (an increase of 14,641㎡).
Yongin Severance Hospital will vertically expand the parking lot site on the left side of the building with a 1-9 floor structure. Floors 1 and 2 will house the cancer center, floor 3 will have educational facilities, and floors 4-9 will accommodate faculty research offices.
When the cancer center is established, the existing faculty research space in the hospital building will be relocated to the research building, and that space will be converted into hospital wards. As the number of beds increases, inpatient treatment for patients will also expand.
The hospital also plans to install an auditorium, seminar rooms, multipurpose rooms, and other facilities in the educational facility to help medical staff with the connection between treatment and research.
Following the city's approval of the architectural permit, construction of the cancer center and faculty research building will begin in the second half of this year. The completion date is January 2028.
Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "Since Yongin Severance Hospital is a key medical facility for the health of residents, when the cancer center and faculty research facilities are established through the expansion of the research building, the level of the hospital's medical services for patients will be elevated, and residents' convenience in using the hospital will also be improved."
Hospital Director Park Jin-o said, "The establishment of the cancer center is to lay the groundwork for local residents to receive comprehensive treatment in a nearby location quickly," and added, "As Yongin's only university hospital, we will further strengthen our capacity for treatment and care for cancer and other serious conditions."
Yongin Severance Hospital, which opened in 1983, relocated to its current location in Giheung-gu, Yongin City with a new building in March 2020.
