Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mee-ae issued a formal apology four days after her so-called "firefighting fiscal drain" remarks mentioned in recent parliamentary audits, which sparked controversy. However, strong offensives from the opposition party, including the People Power Party, and concerns from within the ruling party continue to keep the political furor from dying down easily.

"No intention to disparage"...Governor Choo bows her head after four days

Governor Choo met with reporters in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province on the 17th, stating, "This was an expression mistake made while trying to explain structural fiscal issues," and added, "I had absolutely no intention to disparage firefighters. I sincerely apologize to firefighting officials and bereaved families who were emotionally wounded by how my remarks were conveyed differently than intended."

Earlier, Governor Choo came to the center of controversy on the 13th during a parliamentary audit at the House Administration and Safety Committee when she pointed out the structural limitation that local governments bear most of the personnel and project expenses for firefighting officials who were converted to national civil servants. She stated, "Firefighting is like the most troublesome fiscal drain," and "The personnel and project expenses alone consume approximately 1.7 trillion won next year."

Immediately following the remarks, the firefighting unions and labor circles issued statements strongly objecting, saying, "Firefighters who protect the lives and safety of the people were treated as mere budget waste factors and fiscal burdens."

Opposition: "reckless remarks" vs. Ruling party: "party-level apology" and damage control

The political response was sharply divided. The People Power Party released consecutive statements, heavily criticizing the remarks as "reckless comments that trampled on the dedication and honor of field firefighters," and escalated their offensive by raising questions about the governor's accountability alongside her personal apology. The Gyeonggi Provincial Council's People Power Party faction also condemned it as "irresponsible evasion that shifted responsibility for systemic contradictions to the dedicated firefighting organization."

In contrast, the Democratic Party initiated damage control at the party level through an official spokesman's statement, saying "We sincerely apologize to firefighting officials and their families," taking the lead in de-escalation before Governor Choo's direct apology.

Though Governor Choo personally bowed her head to address the fallout, instead of the original issue of expanding national treasury funding for firefighting finances, the aftermath of political squabbling between the ruling and opposition parties is expected to continue for the time being.
