Yongin Special City (Mayor Lee Sang-il) announced on the 3rd that it will restrict access to the Cheongmi Stream area in Oksan-ri, Baekam-myeon, Cheoein-gu until the 15th, following the detection of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) virus.

The city analyzed samples of wild bird feces collected from the Cheongmi Stream area on the 26th of last month and confirmed the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) virus. In response, the city has prepared quarantine measures to prevent its spread.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza is an acute viral respiratory disease that infects wild birds and poultry. Due to its high transmissibility and mortality rate, it is classified as a Class 1 legally designated infectious disease and a Grade 1 wildlife disease.

First, two access control points will be installed around the area where the virus was detected and operated until November 15th. These checkpoints will restrict access by outsiders and vehicles, excluding farm-related personnel, and conduct surveillance activities to prevent spread.

Additionally, the entire areas of Baekam-myeon and Wonsam-myeon within a 10-kilometer radius from the detection point will be designated as "wild bird surveillance zones" to establish preemptive quarantine measures to prevent the virus from entering farms.

The city estimates that 29 farms in the Baekam and Wonsam areas are raising a total of 1,163,000 poultry.

A city official said, "We are implementing thorough quarantine measures including access control and disinfection in close cooperation between departments to prevent highly pathogenic avian influenza from spreading to poultry farms in the region," and urged poultry farms to "strictly comply with disinfection and quarantine protocols."
