Consulate General of Korea in New York Making "All-Out Effort" to Promote Hangul to the World in the Age of AI
[Suwon Ilbo=Reporter Eom In-yong] The Consulate General of Korea in New York is drawing attention by making an all-out effort to promote Hangul to the world in line with the AI era.
Consul General Kim Sang-ho of the Consulate General in New York posted on his SNS that "The '44th Korean Schools Association Academic Conference and Regular General Meeting' hosted by the Korean Schools Association in America showcased impressive teamwork for 'Team Korea Hangul' with the collaboration of Se-hoon Seo, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Education, Young-dam Lim, Chairman of the International Korean Language Education Foundation, Ye-soon Kwon, President of NAKS, and Chang-won Park, Director of the Education Center at the New York Consulate General," and noted that "the 'BTS' and 'BLACKPINK' Hangul textbooks produced by the education foundation are extremely popular."
Consul General Kim further stated that "at the NAKS academic conference held under the theme of 'Hangul Schools Growing Together in the AI Era,' approximately 500 Korean language teachers from across the United States who attended are already serving as proud civil diplomats of 'the Republic of Korea with strong cultural influence,' and Professor 'Daphne Jue,' Dean of the Korean Language Village in Minnesota Concordia, demonstrates that the Korean Language Village 'Lake in the Forest' is expanding the horizon of Korean studies beyond simple language education."
He particularly emphasized that "K-culture is evolving beyond simple Korean language education to a stage of deep insight into Korea's politics, society, culture, and history."
He added, "Next year marks a meaningful milestone—the 80th anniversary of Yale University in Connecticut, which is under the jurisdiction of the New York Consulate General, beginning Korean language education," and stated, "Since Yale University established an official Korean language program in 1947 for missionaries and military personnel, the Consulate General of Korea in New York will work together to realize the common dream of further elevating the value of Korean language education in the United States."
He continued, "Hangul, created by King Sejong, is now receiving even higher scientific recognition in the world as AI technology is advancing remarkably. Professor Chul-il Lim, who served as keynote speaker at this academic conference (Seoul National University Future Education Innovation Center), emphasized collaboration among stakeholders in AI digital education and attempts to integrate artificial intelligence with other subjects.
Furthermore, "In the case presentations, Strategic Director Ji-sung Hong introduced 'Donguibogam and Korean Traditional Medicine' teaching and learning materials issued by Dasom Korean School in Northern California in 2020, and is attempting history and culture education by combining generative AI with diverse historical and cultural materials including Korean history and immigration history, figures and literature, and traditional and living culture."
