Democrats sweep Senate and House in U.S. midterm elections…Trump faces 'lame duck' crisis in latter half of presidency

U.S. President Donald Trump faces a serious "lame duck" crisis, losing momentum in governing the nation during the latter half of his presidency.

According to results from the U.S. midterm elections held on November 3 (local time), the opposition Democrats secured their majority status in both the Senate and House of Representatives, achieving a sweeping victory. This marks the first time the Democrats have reclaimed both chambers of Congress simultaneously since 2006, a span of 20 years.

The election results are interpreted as reflecting strong "regime judgment" driven by high inflation and unstable international conditions. The Democrats demonstrated their strength by winning not only in key swing districts but also in areas traditionally classified as Republican strongholds.

The Trump administration now faces strong congressional checks for the remaining two years of its term. With the House's budget review authority, the Senate's confirmation power over high-ranking officials, and various standing committees' investigative and hearing authority all shifting to the opposition, major policy initiatives face inevitable delays.

Following the elections, President Trump stated in an official statement that he "accepts the election results and will cooperate with the opposition party." However, he simultaneously shifted responsibility for the defeat to his party and candidates, claiming "I was not directly on the ballot." Furthermore, he signaled his intention to wield veto power and pursue policies through executive orders against Democratic-led legislation, suggesting that confrontation and dysfunction in future U.S. politics will intensify.
