Restoring Politics' Original Purpose Through Compromise and CoordinationProving Suwon's Presence on the National Stage

Bismarck called politics "the art of the possible." This likely means that politics' true function is to coordinate different thoughts and interests and transform them into real conclusions. However, our politics today has become accustomed to collision over dialogue, confrontation over consultation, and strong rhetoric over coordination.

Against this backdrop, the recent adoption of the personnel confirmation hearing report for Kim Ji-yong, inaugural head of the Serious Crimes Investigation Division by the National Assembly's Administrative Safety Committee, is noteworthy. This decision, which included both affirmative and negative opinions, was not a conclusion reached because everyone shared the same view. Nevertheless, the National Assembly did not stop, and the process moved forward. It was a scene that demonstrated politics' original function—handling disagreement within institutional frameworks and connecting it to public conclusions.

At the center of this was Kim Young-jin, a 3-term representative from Suwon District (B) and chairman of the National Assembly's Administrative Safety Committee. Based on issues raised during the personnel hearing and the candidate's responses, he coordinated with secretaries to prepare the report draft. He neither pushed through by gathering only votes of support, nor halted procedures because opposition existed. By acknowledging differences through a method of recording both perspectives, he ultimately fulfilled the National Assembly's responsibility.

This point is crucial. In an era of politics where compromise is misunderstood as weakness and coordination is read as retreat, such a choice is never easy. However, politics is not about silencing opponents, but about addressing conflict, incorporating differences within institutional frameworks, and propelling society forward.

From Suwon's perspective, this scene carries even greater significance. Representative Kim Young-jin is a seasoned 3-term legislator who grew up in Suwon District (B) and stands as one of the representative politicians demonstrating Suwon's presence at critical junctures in national politics. That his coordination skills and political acumen were confirmed in the process of handling nationwide issues means, in turn, that Suwon politics' weight and capacity were simultaneously confirmed. A region's self-esteem is not built on slogans alone. It is created based on how the region's politicians work with what character and capability on the national stage.

Politics' role ultimately connects to the lives of citizens. Politics that only amplifies conflict exhausts the public, while politics that coordinates conflict and produces conclusions increases society's predictability and reduces public anxiety. This decision by the Administrative Safety Committee deserves to be remembered not as a mere closure of a personnel procedure, but as a scene that reaffirmed why politics must exist.

What Suwon 3-term Representative Kim Young-jin demonstrated was not simply the ability to conduct meetings. It was a scene proving that politics can be restored where it ought to be. And that scene was simultaneously a moment reaffirming the presence and character of Suwon politics.
