The government and ruling party are considering financial support of around 2 trillion won for essential investments in the firefighting sector. The Democratic Party and government announced on the 8th that they discussed financial support for essential firefighting investments and measures to ease the firefighting finance burden on local governments at a senior party-government meeting. Leader Kim Min-seok emphasized strengthening national responsibility, stating "Securing firefighting finance is essential."

The ruling party and government reached consensus on the need for fundamental local finance expansion including firefighting and decided to reactivate a government-wide task force (TF). It is reported that utilizing the future response fund has been mentioned as a source of funds.

Behind this announcement lies a structural contradiction in firefighting finance. Although firefighting officials were converted to national status in 2020, the budget for personnel expenses and equipment is still mostly borne by local governments. Following this year's controversy over "financial straw" remarks and reports of a 27.6% cut in firefighting safety subsidies next year, the argument for national responsibility in firefighting finance has been spreading.

Gyeonggi Province, which has the most firefighting officials nationwide, is identified as a direct beneficiary region of this discussion. Gyeonggi Province launched a comprehensive countermeasures task force on the 5th for securing safety at firefighting sites and improving treatment of firefighters, so if national funding is realized, it is expected to gain momentum in conjunction with provincial-level measures.

Specific details including the scale and method of support are expected to be finalized through the National Assembly's budget review process.
