Gyeonggi Province Doubles Nighttime Lane Reflection Performance... Expanded Application by 2027

The 'Gyeonggi-style Lane Marking Painting Standard,' which doubles light reflection performance standards to ensure lanes remain clearly visible at night, is being expanded to road construction sites throughout Gyeonggi Province.
Beginning in 2027, Gyeonggi Province will maintain aging lane markings separately from road repaving projects and will strengthen performance inspections following application. The Gyeonggi Province Construction Headquarters listened to expert and industry opinions in April this year, conducted trial painting and performance measurements, and finalized the standard in May.
The 'Gyeonggi-style Lane Marking Painting Standard' specifies the types and quantities of paint and glass beads, construction methods, and other details to enable the construction of lane markings with higher light reflection performance and durability than before.
According to the improved standard, the minimum retroreflective performance immediately after construction of ordinary lanes increased approximately twofold: white lanes rose from the existing 240 to 500mcd/(㎡·lx), and yellow lanes from 150 to 300mcd/(㎡·lx). Retroreflective performance refers to the degree to which light from an automobile's headlights is reflected back toward the driver, with higher values indicating better lane visibility.
Glass bead usage on asphalt pavement lanes was also increased from the existing 310g per square meter to 646g, and quality standards for paint wear resistance and other factors were specified in detail.
The province plans to reflect the improved standard in designs for new local road projects and intends to apply it to ongoing construction through design modifications. Previously, lane maintenance was primarily conducted together with road repaving projects, which limited the ability to address worn or faded lanes in a timely manner; however, maintenance of aging lanes will now be expanded.
Park Jae-young, Head of the Gyeonggi Province Construction Headquarters, stated, "Improving lane visibility does not end with establishing standards; it is important to actually inspect lane conditions on roads and conduct necessary maintenance in a timely manner. Through field-focused maintenance and systematic quality control, we will create a safe road environment that residents can experience directly."
